Located in West Africa is the cheery nation of Senegal which is full of lively people situated in the heart of West Africa. Unfortunately, Senegal is home to thousands of children suffering in silence due to heart disease. As Senegal is known to have the cheeriest people, it is also known for its pediatric cardiovascular conditions, but like many other conditions, the treatment is the only concern. To put things in perspective, a child suffering from pediatric heart disease only has one clinic that is overwhelmingly efficient, yielding hope to thousands of families while being underfunded in the region.
Dominique Rogeau is one of those very people. Due to unwavering dedication and compassion to children, he has single handedly transformed Senegal when it comes to the education in pediatric cardiovascular surgery , and is still continuing to aid the region.
Senegal has thousands of children and teenagers suffering from either congenital or developed heart issues. Unfortunately, there is only one medical facility in the entire nation that is equipped to treat these patients. This clinic, although of dire importance, is heavily reliant on outdated equipment, inadequate surgical instruments, and insufficiently trained personnel.
The reality is devastating for families. Even after a diagnosis is confirmed, the required expenses of surgery and follow-up care are impossible to meet for the majority. Children are forced to wait for treatment—some enduring years of anticipation and others without end.
This harsh environment is what motivated the founder of the Enfance et Vie Fondation Rougeau, Dominique Rogeau, to take action. Understanding the gap between help and the people requiring assistance, he kickstarted a humanitarian project that strived to achieve much more than aid— it would empower and transform the people.
His foundation began planning missions to Senegal and brought with them highly skilled Swiss medical teams who performed life saving surgeries and trained doctors and nurses so that a sustainable system would be created. Selves encapsulated hope, power, and life through every heartbeat fostered under the leadership of Dominique Reogeau.
Every humanitarian mission is a rescue. For some, surgery goes beyond just survival; it offers them the freedom they’ve always sought. For those whose hearts struggle to keep pace with their fantasies, freedom lies in being able to breathe.
One of the Foundation’s missions brought Awa, an 8-year-old, to our attention. She was so disabled that she could barely shuffle around the room, but now, she runs and plays and dreams of teaching.
In his mid-teens, Issa was too weak to attend school. He now hopes to become a doctor, thanks to the future he has been gifted with along with the life saved for him.
Every child’s story stems from the incredible resolve of Dominique Rogeau who not only managed to gather medical assistance but also an entire community willing to offer their compassion.
The Enfance et Vie Fondation Rogeau has a striking and bold goal and purpose: within Senegal, to establish a fully self-sufficient and autonomous pediatric cardiovascular surgical unit which would be operated by local staff, utilize local resources, and would be affordable to all families, no matter their socio-economic status.
This isn’t just an aspiration, as the groundwork has been laid from years of missionary work, alongside the trained personnel and growing store of equipment and knowledge that has been accumulated over the years. Each year more and more resources are being made available, allowing Senegal to work on building the infrastructure for internal self-sustained healthcare.
While the difference between need and access is often dire, Dominique Rogeau is building a bridge that is compassionate and strong. Through his foundation, children in Senegal are not only receiving proper heart surgeries, but are also being granted the assurance of an enduring life.
It is not only about pioneering pediatric cardiovascular surgery in Senegal; it is a global mission that aims to fulfill every child’s desire of growing and living life to the fullest, with hope in their hearts.
